INAGURAL EXHIBITION
2023
POLK COUNTY HERITAGE GALLERY

The 2023 FOE Project exhibition at the Polk County Heritage Gallery opened with historic significance, drawing nearly 200 attendees and showcasing almost 70 works by ten Iowa-based artists. The event became a vibrant celebration of freedom, self-expression, and community inclusion, offering a profound exploration of identity through diverse mediums. From Holly Newvine’s interactive multimedia masks to Ryan Mueller’s precise geometric abstractions, the exhibition presented an expansive range of art forms that were as emotionally charged as they were visually captivating.

The atmosphere at the opening reception was electric, marked by an overwhelming sense of community and inclusivity. Artists like Kevin Thor shared deeply personal stories behind their creations, such as his God Warrior wearable art. At the same time, the show also marked key milestones for several participants, including Zoe Niswander, who exhibited alongside her father for the first time. The exhibition showcased personal narratives and highlighted marginalized communities' voices, transforming the gallery into a powerful space for resistance and expression.

The 2023 exhibition was made possible with support from The Greater Des Moines Public Arts Foundation, Iowa Department for the Blind, Mosaic in Central Iowa, Ellan Hayes Interpreting Services, AXA Mentorship Program, Jill Wells Art, Mainframe Studios, The Harkin Institute, and Polk County Heritage Gallery. As curator Mary Jones noted, the record-breaking attendance underscored the exhibition’s lasting impact, setting a new standard for future events at the Polk County Heritage Gallery.
